Jim  Holland was drawn to Cape Cod for its beautiful light.  Jim was always interested in art and took up photography in High School.  He studied painting while earning a degree in graphic design.  During road trips to the Cape with college friends Jim began to develop his style of stripped down tranquil scenes.  Jim spent his free time painting during his 15 year career in advertising and graphic design.  He has been painting full-time since 1995.

Jim Holland is known for capturing the soft magical light that has drawn so many visitors and artists to Cape Cod and the Islands.  His work portrays scenes and subjects that are unique and represent a specific moment, yet his images are timeless and universal in their appeal.  Holland thoughtfully removes unnecessary details and distraction from his subjects and reduces them to their essence.  Inspired by great American painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967), Holland’s paintings often center around elements of the human experience and rarely have people in the paintings.  The works also have a strong understanding of design.

“I’ll spend hours mixing paints on my palette and establishing an overall color and tonal scheme. Sometimes I feel I am more aptly called a colorist rather than a painter.”
The enduring themes in Holland’s paintings are the light and space near the ocean. “It’s an expansive and peaceful place to me. The colors can be brilliant or nearly monochromatic. A beached catboat or light slanting on clapboards and through windows, these are simple forms I find endlessly fascinating in how different light affects the mood.” – from the artist’s website
